When combined with subcellular fractionation, mass spectrometry can catalog the lipidome of specific organelles. This approach, although very powerful, does have a variety of limitations. For instance, in many of these experiments a large number of cells are required for robust data generation, and it takes several hours to isolate the organelles or membranes of interest. This has led researchers to develop techniques in which spatial information is added to the mass spectrometry data. Advances in this area have led to mass-spectrometry-based imaging approaches. One such technique uses matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry together with controlled two-dimensional movement of the sample during the data collection ( Cornett et al., 2007 ). Thus, it enables the results for specific lipid species to be represented as an image. The major drawback of this technique is that, owing to limited resolution, it is more suitable for tissue slices than individual cells. Alternative approaches have been developed that achieve sub-micron resolution and therefore are more desirable for cell biologists. Recent technical developments in time-of-flight, secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) have enabled the analysis of both the composition and organization of lipids with a lateral resolution of ∼500 nm ( Touboul et al., 2011 ). The use of next-generation SIMS and incorporating the use of stable-isotope-labeled lipids has allowed researchers to obtain a lateral resolution of 100 nm for a few classes of lipids (for more information, see Kraft and Klitzing, 2014 ). Although these are great tools, it remains difficult to examine dynamic and asynchronous processes, such as cell migration or macropinocytosis in cell populations. Like it or not, emotions share some very real biochemical links with your nervous, endocrine, immune and digestive systems. Isn’t it time you learned something about how your body responds to what you feel—and vice versa?

Psycho means mind. Soma means body. The term psychosomatic , which we’ve been taught to associate with “imaginary” illnesses, in fact refers simply to the physiological connection between the mind and the body – a connection that is seeming more concrete and evident by the day. Science is now showing us with increasing clarity that our feelings and thoughts can help make us sick (or well) in a variety of ways that are definitely not “all in our head.”

For years now, we’ve been hearing that stress is bad for us, but beyond a vague idea that near-constant surges of cortisol and adrenaline can throw our bodies off balance, and maybe make us feel depressed, few of us have had a very clear sense of why that is. Nor have we heard much about how emotions such as grief, anger, fear, joy – or mental states such as mindfulness, contemplativeness and relaxation – might impact our biochemistry.

But this lack of knowledge is certainly not for lack of intriguing scientific evidence. Back in the 1980s, a group of research scientists – including molecular biologist Candace Pert, neuroanatomist Miles Herkenham at the National Institute of Health and neuroscientist Francis Schmitt at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among others – began radically changing the scientific community’s ideas of the way the human body works. Although much of their work was considered radical and controversial at the time, they eventually succeeded in turning a great deal of accepted science on its head. For one thing, they proved that a wide variety of “information-carrying substances” once thought to move only tiny distances between synaptic connections in the brain, in fact travel much farther, hooking up with specific cell receptors in distant locations.

Thanks to new imaging technologies, research scientists have now been able to demonstrate how thoughts and emotions cause distinct neuron-firing patterns within various parts of the brain. They can also observe how these patterns coincide with chemical releases and reactions throughout the body.

For example, when trying to hire senior roles, we began ensuring that we had at least one woman and one underrepresented candidate in the final candidate pool. This resulted in our highest diversity in executive roles to date —and our first ever executives from underrepresented groups in their fields, including our first woman as Head of Engineering . While this was a setback, we learned something invaluable halfway through our efforts: our original goal was too broad. Although the pool of entry-level talent is more diverse than that of tenured engineers, we realized that we couldn’t just increase the number of junior women engineers — we also wanted to make sure that women engineers were well represented at every level of the company. When speaking with our current femaleengineers, we learned that having more women at the top would lessen stigmas linking women to junior positions. That’s why we decided to focus specifically on hiring senior women later in the year, a much smaller but vital talent pool. After revising our internal goal to capture more senior women, we were able to focus the remainder of 2016 on bringing in experienced senior women engineers, including our Head of Engineering.

There is no playbook for making every employee feel included. In a sense, we’re all writing it together right now.
